Accurate Genetic Analysis and Parentage Control

Shelterwood Laboratories is committed to excellence in both conventional equine blood typing as well as DNA analysis.  To insure our optimal performance, Shelterwood Laboratories is an Institutional Member of the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) and has participated in ISAG sanctioned international proficiency testing for many years, both in conventional blood typing and DNA testing.   Having both experience and expertise that is internationally recognized, Shelterwood Laboratories will provide registries or individuals with outstanding credentials as well as accurate and internationally standardized genetic testing.

Currently, Shelterwood Laboratories provides a number of breed registries with bloodstock testing and databasing, as well as parentage verification services using conventional equine blood typing and DNA analysis.  In parentage cases that cannot be solved by blood typing and /or routine DNA analysis due to the death of the sire or dam, Shelterwood Laboratories provides blood type or DNA type reconstruction or DNA forensic analysis of remains if available, to solve these cases.  Shelterwood Laboratories also offers exclusion management services.  This includes investigating each exclusion to help determine the best course of action necessary to resolve the exclusion.

Consultation

The staff at Shelterwood Laboratories also offer a wide variety of consultation services.  When questions arise concerning any aspect of equine genetic testing, the staff at Shelterwood Laboratories is available to help address these issues with dedication and experience.  It is our goal to provide consultation services to resolve any need that arises promptly and accurately.

Education

To help registry members and individuals better understand and utilize the data generated by equine genetic testing, Shelterwood Laboratories offers educational materials in the form of articles, if requested.  Articles and educational materials that our staff has written range from explanations of equine blood typing and DNA testing to utilizing the information on the blood typing cards to prevent fatal disease in newborn foals and prediction of coat coloration patterns.

Research and Development

Shelterwood Laboratories is committed to offering state of the art genetic testing.  This commitment to excellence is exemplified by published equine genetic research.  Scientific articles on equine DNA testing as well as articles on novel methods of DNA forensic analysis in horses have resulted from research performed at Shelterwood Laboratories.  Currently, Shelterwood Laboratories is actively working to develop markers for a chip based DNA test for horses. This type of test, when fully developed, will offer unparalleled options for breed registries to customize their DNA tests to meet the particular genetic testing needs of each breed by adding tests for individual traits to the chips, for example disease and color gene tests.  Additionally, Shelterwood Laboratories is actively participating in the International Equine Gene Mapping Project, the goal of which is to locate and catalog genes in the horse.

Shelterwood Laboratories is the only laboratory in the United States that performs large scale contract equine genetic testing as well as human DNA testing.  Our experience in the field of human forensic testing has enabled us to publish scientific research on forensic analysis of DNA in horses.  The experience in the field of human DNA testing has advanced Shelterwood Laboratories' research capabilities as well as kept us on the cutting edge of the latest DNA technologies.

Sample Storage

Shelterwood Laboratories archives samples on every horse that our laboratory has tested for registry applications since 1985.  Additionally, we provide this service for individuals submitting samples at their request.  In the future, as more DNA based tests for individual traits become available, animals that have stored DNA samples can be tested, if desired, for these traits without submission of a new sample
Cost Effective Pricing

Shelterwood Laboratories has the most competitive price structure in the equine genetic testing service industry.  Currently, our pricing is on a per horse tested basis.  We take pride in offering quality and experienced service at a reasonable price.

Electronic Transmission of Results

Transmission of results is available electronically on an as needed basis.

Trait and Disease Testing

Shelterwood Laboratories performs disease susceptibility testing and trait testing as a part of the equine blood typing services and DNA testing services.  Susceptibility to neonatal isoerythrolysis (NI) can be determined by red blood cell type, which is included in the standard blood typing procedures.  This information provides breeders with the information necessary to prevent a foal from being lost from this neonatal foal disease. In breeds where tobiano coloration is desirable, the staff at Shelterwood Laboratories provides linkage testing for that color pattern.

Some of the DNA based tests offered include red gene and lethal white testing.  Also, licensed HYPP testing is available.  Other disease diagnostic tests are available to veterinarians.

Marker Assisted Selection

Using the DNA tests or blood typing, breeders can select for matings that will prevent genetic or neonatal disease or increase the chances of breeding for a foal that exhibits a variety of desirable traits such as certain coat colors.  This is called marker-assisted selection.  Each year, the staff at Shelterwood Laboratories assists numerous individuals in choosing stallions to meet their specific breeding needs, whether it be prevention of NI, increasing the likelihood of the birth of a foal with a specific coloration, or breeding to prevent diseases like HYPP or lethal white foal syndrome.
Expert Legal Testimony

In cases of legal dispute involving parentage verification and /or animal identification, the staff at Shelterwood Laboratories provides expert legal testimony on an as needed basis.
